Knowing yourself

"To know yourself is the begining of wisdom" said Socrates. Can we always trust what we know of ourselves? What if what we know is nothing but voices of others? Since childhood we have been told by parents, teachers and grades at school, friends, and so on about who we are. Those sources tell us what our value is, and what the values of the world are.

However these voices can be fickle and untrue.

We need to indentify the areas in which we view ourselves through the eyes of others. We need to know if we live to please others and if the standards by which we live were imposed on us.

Some people never find who they truly are because of a fear to look inside and find their true being.  I believe life's biggest battle is in our mind - in the way we think.  Recognising faulty thinking, and learning to think in a new way can bring significant change.

However, realistically we are not going to become a new person overnight.  There is an Afghan proverb that says "Qatra qatra daryo mesha", which means "Drop by drop a river grows". Consistency in making small changes is a path to significant change and success.
